Snake 2K - Atari 2600 Homebrew
Snake 2K is the result of months of work to make the best snake game for the Atari 2600! Fitting in just 2,048 bytes, the game was written 100% in 6507 assembly, with no AI usage at any point. This game will run on most Atari 2600 emulators, and real hardware with the right setup.
Play as a snake, eating randomly placed food in order to grow larger. The more you eat, the more your tail gets in the way! Play with a friend for more fun, including blockade mode where you try and trap your opponent!
Menu Options
The game boots to a menu, where almost every button on both controllers and the console does something to change the game's settings. This menu can be returned to at any time in game by holding Game Reset.
Menu options list
- Game Reset - Starts a new game.
- TV Type - 'Color' setting enables a small grace period before hitting any obstacle.
- Game Select - Cycles through the different game mode options.
The left score display shows two numbers in the menu, the number of players and the game mode. All game modes can be played with either "walls" (solid colored border, snake dies when hitting it), or "portals" (patterned border, causes the snake to wrap to the other side of the screen)
Game modes- 1 - Snake
- 2 - Snake with random obstacles
- 3 - Blockade (2P only!)
- 4 - Blockade with random obstacles (2P only!)
- Left/Right Difficulty - Leave on difficulty B for most players! Difficulty A rotates inputs 45 degrees and requires two neighboring directions to be pressed for an input to register. This mode is intended for better control when using 7800 joypads.
- Left/Right (Either controller) - Changes Player 1 snake color
- Up/Down (Either controller) - Changes Player 2 snake color
- Fire Button - Change snake movement speed (visually shown on the menu).
